Ideas For Change-Making:
This week I am writing something a little different. I wanted to share some resources for anyone who wants to start conducting change in their communities. I have found numerous organizations that support ordinary people wanting to advocate for what they believe in, especially when we are all at home.
Take a class
I am an avid learner and will forever want to learn more about our world. Recently, during lockdown, I have found so many online platforms that hold courses on a specific issue, activism in general and much more. The Youth Social Change Fellowship is one of these organizations that I have joined and will never look back. It has changed me as a person. If you are of age (5-18) and are passionate about youth social change, please check out their website as their summer program applications are open. Another great platform that I have used many times is Coursera. Putting yourself in the vulnerable position of learning and not knowing is difficult, but once you set your mind to yourself as a learner, you will see the world differently. I love Coursera because it is free and there are so many options to choose from. One that I particularly enjoyed was "Feminism and Social Justice." The last idea that I have for learning about our world and its issues are through summer programs. Many universities hold 2-4 week pre-college programs for high schoolers and you can choose specific college courses that match your interests and delve deep into the content. An example of this is a summer program through Brown University that is four weeks long. The leadership institute "transforms your passion for social change into action."
Find organizations that you can support.
During Christmas, one of my friends bought a mango tree planted in Kenya for me. Through the Treedom website, I get sent photos of my tree's progress/growth. This is a great way to celebrate someone you love sustainably.
Another organization that is incredibly useful is Earthday.org. They give you so many different ideas on ways to contribute to our earth's future.
READ!
"Learning gives you knowledge while reading gives you wisdom." -Rukhsar Rukhsar. Subscribe to more newspapers to become in tune with the world around you. It is also essential to find an array of sources to learn from. Many authorities hold a bias (favor over an idea) and can lock you into one mindset. Go read about our world--It will change your perceptions and might have an impact on your actions.
I appreciate you,
Ruby
